The ore contains about 46 per. cent of iron and a large percentage of phosphorus. In Calaveras county there are several small deposits of brown iron ore, at places a mileand h half northeast of Valley springs, half a mile north of Esmeralda and a mile north of Murphy.

The Gogebic Iron Range extends for 80 miles from Lake Namekagon, Wisconsin, in the west, to Lake Gogebic in Michigan, in the west. Nathaniel D. Moore uncovered ore deposits in the Penokee Gap near Bessemer in 1872, but it was not until 1884 that the first iron ore shipment was made.
During the early 1800s the south end of the Sterling Hill deposit was worked for iron ore. The ore there is dominantly franklinite, a zinciron oxide of variable composition. Toward the south end of Sterling Hill the franklinite ran unusually high in iron and correspondingly low in zinc, and thus made a good iron ore.
