Helgustadir Quarry and Mine in Iceland produced enormous quantities of waterclear cleavages of calcite from the mid17th Century until the 20th Century. In fact, it is thanks to the prolific output of this locality that "Iceland spar" became the generic term for all transparent cleavages .
